hypertonic saline bath

Immune cells are able to use chloride ions – a component of sea salt – to synthesise hypochlorous acid, which is the active ingredient in bleach and is known to have antiviral properties. Salt water bathing treatment has been shown to supply human epithelial cells with additional chloride ion supply.

There are no antivirals to prevent or treat viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). Since numerous viruses cause URTI, antiviral therapy is impractical. As we have evidence of chloride-ion dependent innate antiviral response in epithelial cells, a University of Edinburgh Trial conducted a pilot, non-blinded, randomised controlled trial of hypertonic saline nasal irrigation and gargling (HSNIG) vs standard care on healthy adults within 48 hours of URTI onset to assess recruitment (primary outcome). Acceptability, symptom duration and viral shedding were secondary outcomes. Participants maintained a symptom diary until well for two days or a maximum of 14 days and collected 5 sequential mid-turbinate swabs to measure viral shedding. The intervention arm prepared hypertonic saline and performed Hypertonic Saline Nasal irrigation and gargling. The trial recruited 68 participants (2.6 participants/week; November 2014-March 2015). A participant declined after randomisation. Another was on antibiotics and hence removed (Intervention:32, Control:34). Follow up data was available from 61 (Intervention:30, Control:31). 87% found HSNIG acceptable, 93% thought HSNIG made a difference to their symptoms. In the intervention arm, duration of illness was lower by 1.9 days (p = 0.01), over-the-counter medications (OTCM) use by 36% (p = 0.004), transmission within household contacts by 35% (p = 0.006) and viral shedding by ≥0.5 log10/day (p = 0.04).

medical seawater

Commercially marketed medical products are based upon a formula similar to seawater: Delmar hypertonic solution Contains 37 mg of sea salt / ml of solution, an amount similar to the salt content of the Mediterranean Sea, higher than in human body cells. Delmar’s hypertonic solution naturally, quickly and easily provides relief in nasal congestion. It helps cleanse and moisturize the nasal cavities. Hypertonic nasal spray is intended for the nasal mucosa with impaired physiological function in cases of infectious and allergic episodes. The content of salts in the solution is higher than inside cells of the body, salt concentration corresponds to salinity of sea water. Such solutions are called hypertonic. After application to swollen nasal mucosa the solution removes water by natural mechanism of osmosis, thereby reduces swelling and facilitating breathing through the nose. It can also be used as therapy for snoring, as well as prophylaxis or therapy for rhinitis and sinusitis.

An Onsen is a Japanese hot spring with a water temperature anywhere between 104 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most Japanese hot springs are located within or close to a volcanic area, and it is estimated that there are more than 2,500 hot springs in Japan.

Some sources state that the Japanese Onsen culture dates back more than a thousand years, and many myths are associated with this part of the Japanese culture. However, the interest in hot spring experiences has gained significant popularity since the Edo period (1603–1868). And the study of therapeutic bathing (balneotherapy) has formally been established in 1931.

Exposure to high water temperatures can help you to relax your muscles, flush out toxins, decrease inflammation, and promote sleep.

A study conducted by the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute suggests that hot baths increase circulation. This can aid the healing process of muscles, joints, bone, and connective tissue injuries as well as help the recovery from intense workouts.

And according to recent research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, soaking in hot water can also accelerate the metabolism and thus aid weight loss.

Japanese Onsen naturally contains up to 19 different minerals such as calcium, sodium bicarbonate, sulfur, and iron. During the hot spring bath, these minerals are absorbed through the skin. This not only improves circulation and oxygen flow but also provides many health benefits.

According to the Japanese Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns, bathing in Onsens can improve many conditions, which vary by the type of mineral.

hammam.jpg

Inside the Hammam you find multiple rooms; in each one, from the coldest to the hottest, there are attendants taking care of your every need.

You begin in the changing room (apodyterium), then, with just a towel on, you proceed to the warm bath (tepidarium 36°) where, after a hot shower, you start the hammam.

You lie down on a warm marble bench,in a dreamlike atmosphere, surrounded by the faint sound of water and a pale light. Then alternating partial hot water wash - that open up your pores - with the use of natural black olive soap, your body will soon shift to deep relax mode.

From the tepidarium, you move the hot baths (calidarium 45°- 100% humidity) where you will experience the real “steam bath”; here the strong heat aids in calming the mind to the point that you feel yourself asleep. < This can be combined with sea salt therapy / japanese mineral spring salts

The steam improves circulation and is also good for the lungs, helps to fight common cold, flu and rheumatic pains. The sweating removes toxins and excess water in the body. Following the hot baths, you vigorous body scrub with the traditional Hammam glove. The Hammam is an appropriate habit because it prevents cold and flu.
