University of East London Bamboo Modular Structure Research

The collaborative work with the UEL faculty and students feeds directly into the research studio’s continuing practice of delivering adaptable and modular staging and bespoke structures as a viable addition or alternative to industry standard steel or aluminium modular staging components.

The long term goal is to develop bamboo structural components into a 48mm BSI tubing compatible, rated + tested, lightweight, rugged and safety over-compliant structural system.

The bamboo toolkit is designed with a physical desktop modelling and validation method, and also can employ rapid manufacturing and a computer modelling / realtime physics / VR method, comprising an intuitive and flexible structural engineering validation system

Bamboo structures can be deployed as an underlying skeleton underpinning installed community assets which can be adapted to form the backbone of multiple productions and ad-hoc public space use profiles.
